NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (8.20.2014) – As parents prepare to help their kids select the right sized backpack, proper school attire, and perfectly appointed school supplies, Period Packs, Inc. wants to prepare young tween ladies for what they may not yet be prepared for…their period. To do so, the North Andover-based company re-launched its e-commerce site with several new first period gift boxes including traditional, organic, and an alternative menstruation option–the menstrual cup.
Why Prepare Before The Period Arrives?
Most parents will not think to include an emergency period kit for their daughters this Fall, yet because young women begin menstruating between the ages of 9 and 14 years of age—it can be difficult to predict exactly when a young woman’s cycle will begin or even when to begin to discuss this pubescent change.
According to Period Packs’ Chief Maxi Wendy Agudelo, back-to-school is a perfect time to begin sharing information about menstruation. “Premenstrual young ladies generally don’t make menstruation preparation a part of their overall thought process,” she said. “Yet, an initial discussion and a few items placed into a small bag for storage in their school locker can make a tremendous difference should her menstrual cycle begin, unexpectedly.”
To create an ‘emergency period kit,’ place the contents below in a simple cosmetics bag or even a Ziploc storage bag, which can be kept discreetly in a school locker throughout the school year:
- an extra pair of underwear,
- 2-3 regular sized maxi pads,
- hand sanitizer
- a special note from you saying how much you love her.
- Adding a special treat (be it chocolate, gum, or small gift card for an after school beverage) is always a lovely extra.
- Place in her backpack on the first day of school and explain why you want her to keep it in her locker ‘just in case.’
